Segun Oni

ESSENTIAL SEGUN ONI
By
Seye Adetunmbi, 22/11/O6
This article was first written just before Chief Segun Oni contested for Governorship Ekiti State in 2007 and posted to Ekitipanupo Forum. The article was revised for publication in Ekitipanupo Legacy Book in 2015 and updated for the this blog in 2018 and 2024 with the 70th birthday celebration photos.
This is about volunteering information. One of the things that are responsible for wrong decisions in the Nigerian society is lack of information and accurate data that could facilitate good judgment on policy issues that would do the nation good. Also most of the wrong choices made in the past into the elective positions in Nigeria could have been averted if only people spoke out about the aspirations and candidacies of most of these people in position of authority in good time. It is a different thing if people volunteer what they know and the electorate vote otherwise, or the system votes out capable and reliable hands. Then, it would not be because the people miss it due to lack of knowledge, but indeed a matter of choice which allies with the common saying that every polity deserves the kind of leader they have.
By way of background, Engineer Segun Oni was born into the Christian Oni family in Ilogbe quarter of Ifaki-Ekiti on the 5th of September 1954. His father was the Baba-Egbe of Methodist Cathedral Ifaki. He grew up at Ifaki where he had his basic primary education and Modern School education before gaining admission to Wesley College, Ibadan (1969-1971). What made him to stand out among his peers in his teenage days was his brilliance. He belonged to the class of students who were leading their classmates in academic pursuits. He was among the youngest in his set that passed his WASC/Cambridge through correspondence which later qualified him for admission into University of Ife in September 1974 through preliminary examination. He came out of Ife with Second Class Upper and was indeed a shining example to the upcoming younger generation of Ifaki indigenes. He graduated with B.Sc. Honors in Chemical Engineering from University of Ife in June 1979 and MBA from the University of Lagos (1982).

Apart from the brief teaching period as Arithmetic, Mathematics and Geography teacher at Community Modern School, Ido-Ekiti and Aiyetoro-Iloro High School from January 1972 to September 1974, his first corporate job was with Ajaokuta Steel Development Company after his NYSC compulsory national service. He later joined the Delta Steel Company, Aladja (1982-1984) after his post-graduation at the University of Lagos. Thereafter, he had a fairly long and stimulating working career at Rank Xerox Company. Engineer Segun Oni is dogged, a dedicated worker who diligently served the company, Rank Xerox, and delivered superlative results in all the units he worked. This was what earned him a posting to Kenya (1992-1995) as a Customer Service Operations Manager by Rank Xerox Headquarters (UK) as an expatriate, the first time an African was so treated. Until he left the company in 2000, he was the Regional Director for Xerox Nigeria in charge of Northern Region and Abuja.
One thing that must be mentioned here was the deliberate efforts Engineer Oni made to look out for opportunities for all ranks of people in his constituencies in every place where he had worked. He did not limit himself to Ekiti people and those who were academically qualified. If it is menial job that one merits, he will arrange for such person to prospect for appointment whenever the company throws such opportunity open. Through his benevolence Rank Xerox offered me Sales Man job in 1990 and I would have taken up the vocation but have commenced a career as a Stockbroker.

The beginning of his sojourn in partisan politics could be traced to an unequivocal association with the aspiration of Professor Tunde Adeniran who contested for the Governorship of Ekiti State in 1999 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). No doubt Engineer Segun Oni is always loyal to any cause he believed in, and would use everything at his disposal to propagate his mission. Recalling an encounter on the 6th of December 2003 when the first Ekiti day was held during which we both played active roles. After a sumptuous pounded yam meal in the residence of my friend, I told him of my wish to serve Ekiti State in 2007. He then said, and quote: “aburo may be I have not told you, I want to contest for Governorship in 2007” I then took him up for not contesting the primaries of PDP in 2003 which to me would have been strategic for him which he admitted kind of! However, as a dedicated person to the party hierarchy, he gave all his support to the then most favored candidate, Chief S K Babalola who after all efforts did not pick the ticket.
During fund raising dinner for him at Airport Hotel, Ikeja in 2007
He faced herculean task of being part of PDP under the auspices of the controversial Governor, he stuck to the party to confront injustice. Different people deployed various means to fight the unpopular disposition of the troublesome Governor at a distance. Engineer Oni was one of the few front-line PDP members who suffered physical assault in the hands of the collaborators of the tyrant. It was not surprising when he found his way back to the party fold when a better level playing ground has finally come to reality in a party where he had been one of the leading benefactors.
He is the brain behind Ekiti Development Agenda (EDA) and the native catchphrase of his campaign organisation and structure on ground in Ekiti is Irewolede. His organization EDA has been involved with the sponsoring of JAMB students for 2 years by obtaining Jamb forms, in 2005 for 1600 qualified Ekiti State students that cut across all the local government areas (100 students per LGA) and Jamb Study Centers (16 in number) for 3 months yearly. As a matter of fact 10 of the students he sponsored in the scheme scored 295 and above in the 2005/2006 JAMB examination result. His dedication to PDP and resourcefulness earned him an appointment in the board of Education Trust Fund representing the South West geo-political unit. He also used this medium to reach out to as many people as possible and his professional disposition no doubt made it possible to serve in the Board of Trustees for many years.
No doubt for someone with his kind of inclination, his impact in Ifaki community was felt and recognized. He was installed the Baba-Egbe of Methodist Cathedral, Ifaki in 2006, a position his father once occupied. It is not only by sheer providence, he earned it. His house in Abuja was always a meeting point for Ekiti elite and anyone who required short-stay in Abuja. The few times I had cause to be in Abuja on official assignment in the past and was not compelled to lodge elsewhere, I stayed with him. His, is certainly that of a prophet appreciated by his people as evident in the award of Ifaki Progressive Union during the 2006 Ifaki Day celebration.
The conventional trend is for people to be clannish and want their person to be the anointed or generally because a Governorship aspirant or candidate comes from one's hometown, then support should be given to such person without any reservation. Of course, it is only natural for me to customarily wish to pitch my camp with my fellow Ifaki brother coupled with the fact that I have had a good relationship with him. However, I am not really inclined to dogmatic principle of this sort; my first consideration is to go for what I consider is in the best interest of the people while showing understanding to such person if there is any inadequacy. It does not matter if the person is a relation or a neighbor, I will say it the way I see it through the grace of God. Engineer Oni no doubt is far more capable than most of the aspirants so far because he has indisputable good fundamentals in his favour. Incidentally, my elder brother too, a tested technocrat to the core with robust intellect is contesting under Action Congress for Senatorial seat. He is equally up to the task for what he is bidding for and would in fact do Nigeria proud at the upper house red chamber. Ordinarily, their scenario would have called for one to give way for the other in the final analysis if sharing of elective post were to be based on geographically spread among other considerations. Nevertheless, reason had since prevailed that the community should wait until after the primaries since they do not belong to the same political party anyway.

In essence, my involvement in Ekiti politics and position here is not about any dynasty, my hometown, Ekiti North senatorial zone thing or personal interest, it is about what is deemed best for Ekiti indigenes that are in the majority. Therefore, what informed this write-up was born out of the innate desire to bring to the limelight more facts which the polity may not be known about this brilliant, cultured, generous and promising Ekiti son. This becomes expedient now that people were calling for more information on political elective office aspirants. His candidacy no doubt would be an asset to any political party who fields him and his emergence will do Ekiti proud if elected. If I do not believe in his competence, I would rather keep quite or find a way to make my position known to those who will take decision. The beginning of a new dawn in Ekiti is for all the political parties to field the best such that in the final analysis whoever wins Ekiti would be better for it irrespective of political platform. This is why I remain an unrepentant advocate of the call for Ekiti electorate to be candidates driven.
By extension, those people who have worked under a constituted authority in a commercial enterprise setting charged with targets and deliverables and rose to the top management level in their calling like Engineer Oni; Ekiti people should watch out for such candidates with this pedigree and vote for them in all tiers of government. While it is not sacrosanct to say government contractors, people who have been predominantly self-employed, managers of non-profit organisations or those with no strong private sector exposure at top management level in the corporate sector would not be suitable for governance in Nigeria, it is imperative for people in this category to justify why they should be entrusted with the serious business of governance at state and national levels. Those people who have not been used to taking orders, being guided by company policies derived from the power entrusted in the hands of the board of directors by duly constituted shareholders’ forums, must realize that governance in a democratic setting is a different ball game. It is real business and people with professional disposition are bound to excel and make a whole world of difference. Ekiti people must find a way to get it right as a going concern.

GOLDEN JUBILEE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: MR & MRS AYO AJAYI

The celebrants
On the 27th of July, 2024, Mr & Mrs Ayo Ajayi çelebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding ceremony with a thanksgiving service at Our Saviour's Anglican Church, Tafawa Balewa Square,  Lagos. The memorable occasion was graced by the erstwhile primate of the Church of Nigeria, the Most Reverend Jasper Akinola; Right Reverend Odejide and Right Reverend Ifedola Senasu Okupevi, the Bishop of Lagos Diocese, who delivered a remarkable sermon.

Bishop Okupevi
The bishop in his sermon, testified to the good nature of the exemplary couple from his personal relationship with them. The video clip below says it all.

It was yet another beautiful and a well attended church service hosted by the quitessential couple. The climax for me, watching it virtually, was when the dexterous pipe organist clinically played different melodious tunes per stanza for one of the hymns sang during the administration of the sacrament.

Oga and madam have done it again. They are excellent in planning and organising family events and ceremonies. The 50th wedding aniversary was not an excemption. Kudos!
My prayer is that God will continue to keep them both. They will live long together in good health in Jesus Christ’s name 🙏🏾

CELEBRATING QUINTESSENTIAL SEPTUAGENARIAN AYO AJAYI
By
Seye Adetunmbi, 6/3/18
Having a humble beginning may not necessarily be a big deal or any serious issue considering the fact that it is a relatively common phenomenon in the contemporary world. What would make news is how someone has been able to rise above early challenges while growing up in a small Ekiti community, thereafter got to the pinnacle of a working career in the foremost multinational company in Nigeria, finished well in the office, live well after retirement and continue to be relevant in his community and environs. This is the story of a provident man of destiny, Ayodele Ajayi in summary. Considering his background and various tasks he overcame to secure primary and secondary education while counting his blessings today, one is bound to agree with him when he says that he is an extremely lucky person that received and still enjoys an uncommon favor of God the almighty.

In a way his humble beginning turned out to be a strong foundation for him to build on, as well as an asset for him in his working career by way of an applied knowledge in the corporate world. All the things he learnt from getting involved in the trading activities of his highly resourceful entrepreneur mother, contributed immensely to the successes he recorded as a salesman in his early career days in UACN PLC. As a little boy he worked hard with his enterprising mother to produce various consumer goods for the local community. He assisted his diligent mother to sell the wares in Aiyede-Ekiti his home town and the neighboring community markets which they plied on foot and it was from this petty trading endeavor that his secondary school fees were paid. At some point he wondered why the management of UACN placed in the G.B. Olivant division of the conglomerate after his induction to the management cadre as a fresh university graduate. It then occurred to him that the information he provided during interview about his childhood exploits in trading activities informed their decision.
Joshua Ayodele Ajayi was born on the 6th of March 1948 to the family of Pa Ajibola and Chief Mrs Jolade Ajayi in Aiyede-Ekiti. He passed out with Grade One at Aiyede Grammar School in 1965. After his Higher School Certificate course at Ijebu Muslim College, Ijebu-Ode, he graduated with honours in Economics from University of Ibadan in 1972. With several offered corporate jobs before him, he settled for the best among them, UAC of Nigeria PLC (UACN), as a graduate management trainee.

In 1981, Ayo Ajayi was posted to the Personnel Division as the Management Training Coordinator. He became the Merchandise Manager, Kingsway Stores in 1985 and General Manager G.B. Olivant (GBO) in 1988.  He was appointed head of Personnel in December 1990 and in September 1993 got on the Board of Directors of UACN PLC. He became the Managing Director of UAC Foods Division in January 1999 and in January 2000 he was appointed the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UACN. He is a product of University of Michigan Business School (1982) and Harvard Business School (1999). He was a member of the: Nigerian Institute of Management, Nigerian Institute of Personnel Management, Governing Council of the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Council of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. In 2017, he was elected the President of Aiyede Progressive Union.
His tenure as the CEO of UACN revolutionized the fortune of the foremost multinational company in Nigeria. The voice of the people as the popular philosophical saying, is the voice of God. Colleagues, friends, relations and other ranks of associates at various times attest to the imitable character of Ayo Ajayi. They give kudos to a life full of notable achievements, significant landmarks and tremendous success. After he marked 60th birthday and retired in 2008 as the Managing Director of UACN, there was a special report on him by The News magazine of March 10th 2018 where a number of people shared their personal experiences with him, the summation of it all is that he is a man of excellence and impeccable character.
Chief Ernest Sonekan has this to say about him. “Ayo is transparently honest. When I was the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of UACN, Ayo Ajayi was among the few that shared in the vision of the UAC. One of the things I was appointed to do was to foster a good leadership and create a change in every aspect of our operations. Then we needed good managers who were Nigerians and transparently honest to move our vision to the next level. Ayo Ajayi belonged to this group and he really supported me and made my administration succeed. When he took over as the Managing Director in 2000, there was no denying that the UAC was operating far below its potential and the statistics bear this out. Within seven years in office, he stabilized the business and brought it to the point of profitability. He put a lot of courage and dedication to reposition the company for better returns to the shareholders and other stakeholders.
Bassey Ndiokho, the man he succeeded said that Ayo Ajayi is a good manager of resources. “The selection of my successor in 2000 was a great task the UACN took with all seriousness. There was the task of ensuring that things were turned around in UAC and at the end of a rigorous exercise of screening and indeed looking for the best hand for the job of leading the UAC, Ayo Ajayi emerged the best candidate for Chief Executive Officer of UACN. He knew where the shoe pinches and the best way to bring the business to the level of profitability. He was creative and full of ideas and had worked with me closely and passionately. I saw how he managed and controlled people to induce and induct them to work towards getting maximum effective and efficient result. He appreciated team spirit and I was delighted that he succeeded me as the Managing Director. His tenure stabilized the business and repositioned it for maximum benefit to the shareholders. He left a legacy that will endure the minds of his predecessors and successors. He is a national legacy whose potential should be tapped at the national level for the good of the country. He is a kind of person Nigeria needs to move country forward and restore hope in for instance in the energy sector as he did in the UACN PLC.”

Larry Ettah, his successor said that Ayo Ajayi was the face of stabilization for UACN PLC. “Ajayi has a persevering spirit, character, integrity and a lot of doggedness in him. In his generation he represents a bundle of loyalty, creativity and vision. In terms of leadership, he is a role model that should be emulated by business executives of today. He is a very honest, transparent, fair and just leader who loves hard work and devotion. Above all he is a good Christian and a symbol of courage, loyalty and dedication in UACN. When he took over as the Managing Director in 2000, he inherited a business portfolio that had significant challenges. It then became imperative to look at reshaping and restructuring the business in terms of divestment, creation of new business ideas and to a large extent radical change in budget allocation. His era marked when the company moved radically from making losses to declaring profits. It was a landmark achievement for UACN PLC and his personality. He reshaped the business and channeled it towards the path of success and profitability.” Larry remarked.
Chief Isaaz Ogbue is a shareholder of UACN PLC; he said that Ayo Ajayi made an indelible mark at UACN. “We were both members of the choir at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. Ajayi is an amiable man of God who has charisma that attracts people to him. He is ever cheerful and ready to help others. As a shareholder of UACN PLC, I would say that Ajayi raised the level of our hopes and aspiration. When he came on board as the Managing Director in 2001, he transformed the organisation from running at a loss to making profit. In fact it was a remarkable feat to say the least. The transformation he made was such that the share price of the company increased tremendously. The shareholders will ever be grateful for making UACN what it is today. He made an indelible mark that will remain forever in the sands of time. Ayo is a very godly man who has respect for family life and values. Such a person can contribute meaningfully if invited at the national level. He is highly disciplined”
The Right Reverend Akin Odejide said that Ayo Ajayi is a bundle of humility. “He has no pride at all. He associates with both the small and the big in the society. He is a convinced and committed Christian who has knowledge of the scripture and puts it into practice. He uses time, talent and treasure to serve the Lord faithfully. He is a man of his word, a very frank person who calls a spade a spade. H e always stands absolutely on the side of the truth all the time, he doesn’t waver at all. He is an example of a topmost executive that should be emulated by other executives. He is approachable and helpful to anybody around him or that comes his way. He is a typical Ekiti man who likes his ethnic group and loves his Aiyede-Ekiti home town”
Chief Gboyega Awomolo said that Ayo Ajayi is a bundle of good character. “My main attraction to him is of two significant factors. The first one is his humility and friendly disposition. He makes us to be part of him. He honours and respects everybody around him. The second aspect of him is that he is one man with an outstanding character and integrity. Ajayi is a man of consistency and unwavering dedication. When he was made the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the UACN PLC, he opened his life to the outside world where people thought he was a superman. At the beginning when he unfolded his agenda for the UACN, we thought he was daydreaming and said to him that he can’t cope with target. But at the end of his first year in office, the company’s record was outstanding and highly rewarding. He is a man that is not corrupt who can turn Nigeria around if given the opportunity. He is a man of his word. He is an example of people who can give hope and aspiration to the younger generation of Nigerians. His life, character and integrity are worthy of emulation”. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria remarked.

Need I say more about a man who is happily married to a virtuous complementary wife and the the marriage is blessed productive children and grandchildren than to wish oga a happy 70th birthday anniversary and many more years in good health in Jesus name, amen.

Faloye

CONFERENCE ON AFRICAN ORIGINS
The well attended conference on African origins held as scheduled on February 21st 2018 at Muson Centre, Lagos Island and it was a commendable success. The journey to create an effective awareness program to enlighten and empower the Black Man has started. The new scientific evidence presented by Prince Justice Faloye in his book and outstanding audio-visual documentary informed the holding of the maiden conference to formally bring it to the public domain. There is indeed need to increase the collective intelligence of the origin/indigenous Africans with regards to their true origins and collective aspirations. The two main ethno-linguistic groups across Nigeria and Africa as a whole are the original Africans referred to as the Niger-Congo linguistic family who all originated from the same source and Afro-Asians who are products of various Asiantic cultural imperialism.

The original Africans constitute 70% majority of Nigerian and African population. Yorubas and Igbos are the original African groups in Africa and they share the same cultural foundations with all other ethnic groups in southern and central Nigeria, as well as from Gambia to South Africa.

Apparently, a well articulated cultural identity and interrelationships of original Africans is necessary and strategic to improve  cultural pride, boost work ethics and be a basis for political unity. For tool long, the original African economic and political progress has been arrested with divide and rule tactics.

The believe in some intellectual quarters is that the Black Race can rise provided the original Africans at its core can unite on a well articulated empowering and unifying cultural platform. This could be achieved preferably through a think tank that strives to dictate public discourse, as well as public policy through direct means like seminars and symposiums. This is what the debut conference of African Origins was all about.

Let's use this opportunity to congratulate Justice Faloye, his co-organizers and sponsors of the resourceful outing.
