DR ABIODUN ADU (1946-2026)
An Accomplished Gynaecologist and a Credible Public Intellectual
By, Seye Adetunmbi, 15/4/2026
The sad news of the transition of Dr Abiodun Adu, a native of Ikere-Ekiti based in the United Kingdom on 22/03/2026 came to me as a rude shock. His friend of over 60 years and classmate at Christ's School, Ado-Ekiti, Dr Femi Orebe sent me a message and I quote: "Okan, kale. Very terrible news.We lost Biodun Adu today. Cardiac arrest in church. Hospital couldn't help. Absolutely Terrible". he wanted me to inform the various constituencies that we belong to. Under the caption, ERIN WO, I posted a short message online to Ekitipanupo intellectual roundtable, Atokeibeirosi forum and Christ's School alumni association platform. The message is quoted thus: "I just received very sad news from oga Orebe that we lost Dr. Abiodun Adu, today. It was so shocking! He went to church this morning. Being a prominent member of this forum and due to the suddenness of our painful loss, Atokeibeirosi should observe a period of sober reflection 😔 for the next 24 hours and limit posts here to paying tributes and condolence messages to his family. Definitely, this platform won't be the same again without oga Biodun. It is hard to believe that Dr Adu had just gone like that. We surrender all to God. Hmmm!
Expectedly, Atokeibeirosi forum responded appropriately to the sad news with a torrent of tributes which documented below:

At 9:25 pm, Colonel Deji Okeya (rtd) wrote: Serious matter, he was active all yesterday, and even early today, I think. May oga rest well, such a jocular personality. He'll be sorely missed. May the Lord comfort and strengthen his family and all of us in Jesus name. At 9:29 pm, I then posted to the forum that his last post to the forum the previous day was at 10:19pm. It is a terrible loss indeed!
The oldest member of Atokeibeirosi, alagba Ayodele Omowumi wrote at 9:45pm: I got the news of his passing away through a mutual friend earlier in the day. But, I just got too scared to break it on the platform. He had a cardiac arrest in the church earlier in the day and could not be gotten to the hospital before he passed on. The whole thing is beyond bearing. I had a seven post exchange with him yesterday on this platform; the last being at 19.53 yesterday. Anyone could imagine how my being was shattered on hearing the sad news. Doki, as I used to call him, is one of the most good natured person anyone could think of. No malice, all just good-naturedness and positive vibes. May his soul rest in peace.

Folks I’m speechless with rage, despair, dumbfounded, lost for words on our sudden loss of Biodun. My phone has been on silence since church service this morning. No wonder I missed several calls today! Dr. Biodun Adu was just a delightful fellow, never meant no harm; only enjoying himself on this platform as he fitted. I will miss him as a friend. I will miss him as a prominent member of Agba Ulu on this platform. Rest in perfect peace, friend. At 10:33 pm, Ayodele Omowumi wrote: O ye Oloun, one can only say in consolation about the loss of a man who lived such an enviable life. At 10:39 pm, Segun Sanni wrote: Aaahhhh! This life means nothing o! Jesus, please forgive us our sins and draw us closer unto you o. 🙏🏾 So sad. 😌😩
At 10:45pm I wrote: Very sad indeed! O d'eru ba 'yan! Segun Sanni also commented: O d'eru ba mi o! 😩 At 10:49 pm, I then wrote: This is why it is so disheartening to see that some people are busy stealing from the masses on a primitive acquisition voyage. It is such a shame that people in government in Nigeria continue to go about their affairs as if they will live forever instead of deploying the commonwealth for the benefit of the majority. Whoever has the chance in government to make the difference in the affairs of the governed must not blow up such a rare opportunity. At 10:50 pm, Gbenga Ogunsakin posted: Yeeee!!!😟🙃😳 10:50 pm, Segun Sanni posted: When cardiac arrests refuse to respect medical experts, what shall ordinary folks do? 😱🙆🏾♂️🤷🏽♂️😭10:52 pm, Ayodele Omowumi commented: This explains why cardiac arrest is called a silent killer. No warnings!

At 1:17 am, Professor Oluwole Akindahunsi: Seye please bear with me. Talking of those people in government who have chance but refused to make a difference: Life is short for all us indeed. Less than 90 days we have lost two of our best of the best on the platform - Odun Omoboye and Dr. Biodun Adu both excellent good individuals, if given a chance in government would have made a difference, Please in their memory eda kan omola o:

I pray this is not true. He was lively yesterday. Haba! At 6:33 am, Ayodele Omowumi wrote: Permit me to share with us, the exchange I had with a common friend on the passing-on of Dr Biodun Adu. It speaks volumes of him. Below:
My wife's take is that all humans should just console themselves that death would come, and in any form. I had a dental treatment a few months ago, and my tongue got injured that for about a month, I couldn't even swallow water without excruciating pain. It was at my wife's suggestion that I should seek Biodun's opinion about what to do since all treatment failed, and I was losing weight being unable to eat. I got in touch with him. He recommended a mouth wash, which got rid of the pain. So when I told her of Biodun's passing away, her response was as above that death could come in various ways. That if I have not got in touch with him, who knew what could have happened to me. Biodun was such an empathetic human being.
At 6:54 am, Bode Ojo wrote: Oga Biodun was looking forward to his 80th birthday this year with enthusiasm. Man proposes, God disposes. He has an impressive pedigree and trajectory, having attended Christ School Ado Ekiti, and University of Lagos, where he trained as a medical doctor, and then his professional career spanning decades. The Adu family of Ikere Ekiti, the old students of Christ School, University of Lagos alumni, Ekitipanupo, Atokeibeirosi, other Associations, extended family and friends have lost a gem. It is hard to believe that Oga Biodun has joined the saints triumphant. Life however long, is for a short time.

I had it in mind that we would break the jinx of our failed summer meetings this summer! Unfortunately, that will never happen until the resurrection morning! Another important lesson is that we must make the prescription of Romans 12:18 our daily medication. It enjoins us to endeavour to live at peace with everyone. Not that people should live at peace with us but that we should, because we don't have a control over how people choose to live their lives. The Book of James 4:14 likens our lives to a vapour which appears for a little time and then disappears! Our consolation should lie in Isaiah 57:1 which says that God takes away the righteous before the day of evil! May the joking, peaceful and Manchester United loving soul of Uncle Biodun Adu rest peacefully and may the Almighty God grant his family, friends and associates the fortitude to bear this apparently irreplaceable loss, Amen!

At 4:57 pm, Dr. Dokun Adedeji wrote: Uncle Biodun, how do we explain this to ourselves? The sun was high up and suddenly, it turned to sunset! Many times, you gave us reasons to smile. Now, it's plastered to our faces. You were not spring chicken but your life typified that of one. Recently at Old Trafford, we sang together of the returning glory to the Theatre of Dreams. Now, our song has turned into a dirge. The platform was a mishmash of emotions. But you stopped our fingers on our keyboards
Our fingers now feel like lead. Our brains are cluttered like the spider's cobweb. Our tear glands are laden with water held at bay by sheer grit. We have no answers to your sudden flight. Overnight, we have been transformed into philosophers. Taking refuge under the unfailing wings of God. Solomon told us that there's a time to be born and a time to die. You have shown us. David said there is only a step between life and death. You have exemplified it. Khalil Gibran said that usually it is what gives us joy that brings us sadness. We waited for your usual wise cracks though Seye had whispered your passage. Alas, none came. You now belong to the ages, Uncle Biodun. Many of us never were privileged of your physical acquaintance. That longing belongs to the end of times. The eagle now sits forlorn atop the iroko. Head bent and wings clipped. Announcing the emptiness of the nest. Goodnight Uncle Biodun. May the angels bear you upon their wings as you daintingly waft to your celestial home
Prepared and adorned in gold. Uncle Biodun, what shall we say concerning this?

Oh Lord have mercy!. Uncle Biodun dead! Ha, we have lost a great soul and legend. May uncle’s soul rest in perfect peace. Uncle Ayo a ku aseyinde sir. - Tokunbo Ibikunle
May his soul rest in peace. His memory will be dearly cherished by me. My interactions with him were few but each was edifying for me. He was one who knew my birth mother‘s heritage since their families were both from there, and he sustained my wistful nostalgia with his cordiality and noble reflection of the growing environment of Ikere-Ekiti of those days. His truly was a life of achievements, and was cordial to the end. May God bless his family and all that survived him.

Dr. Adu did pretty much everything right, except give us just a little more time. But then, we all have our own expiration date and don't get to change it, no matter what. Oga Biodun - Rest well sir. You earned it🙏🏾.

Oh wao! A good man has gone home to rest. Dr Biodun Adu was a good man. His essays and intervention were easy read and witty. In fact very witty, and its almost impossible not to know that he was a Manchester United fan. Very receptive to other opinions but a giant of an intellectual himself and wrote effortlessly and lucidly. Sad. Very sad! May God grant him eternal rest and console his family and friends, especially Baba Orebe. Good night sir. - Dr Adedamola Dada

Such a pity. I also never met this intellectual giant in person. He was a typical rep of our common root - Ekiti. For two decades, I enjoyed his interventions on all the social media forums to which we belong. May God condole his wife and family members. And may God grant his soul eternal rest

A poem in honour of Oga Biodun:
LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road. And the sun has set for me. I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not for long. And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared. Miss me, but let me go.. For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone. It's all part of the master plan. A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart. Go to the friends we know. Laugh at all the things we used to do Miss me, but let me go. - Christina Rossetti.

I thank you very much for this piece as it captures the whole essence of a man of character and positive values! Adieu, Dr. Biodun Adu! - Folorunso Osunrayi, 25/3/2026
Dr Abiodun was a typical passionate alumnus of Christ's School, Ado-Ekiti. An extract from an interview he granted some years ago says it all as a distinguished product of the school. Dr Abiodun Adu in a bit of the
history of Adu clan in Christ’s School said: “Richard my younger brother gained
admission into Christ’s School in 1962, he was in Bishop now Mason House. He
left the school with a Grade 1. I left Christ's School in 1963 and I was in
Mason House. My other brothers who attended the great school were Professor
Simeon Bisi Adu (popstar Sade's dad) and same set with Prof Kayode Osuntokun.
Reuben Adeniyi Adu (Afro-food packaging), Rufus Bamigbola Adu belonged to the
first set to do WAEC in Class 5. Their brilliant set was joined with the year 6
that included Chief Dele Falegan to sit for WAEC. Julius Olatunji Adu
(Acro-Sambo, a great footballer) belonged to the 1960 set of Prof Jide
Osuntokun. There is Mathew Olawumi Adu who belonged to 1964 set. UP
School.”
After his secondary education at Christ's School, he gained admission into University of Lagos to study medicine. He worked in the United Kingdom for many years where and retired. His being resident in England notwithstanding, he was not far from his kinsmen. He was part of us in Ekitipanupo Intellectual Roundtable where he shined so much as a public intellectual with his in-depth articulate knowledge of contemporary issues that was functionally deployed for progressive politics in Nigeria and Ekiti-State in particular. When Atokeibeirosi forum evolved, he was a respected voice on the platform throughout which explains the way the members came out to pour out their minds paying tributes after he passed-on. He was a jolly good fellow who lived well. No doubt, he would be missed by everyone who moved close to him. Fare thee well, sir.
